Best Athletic Shorts For Men In 2023
We’ve reached a new era of acceptance when it comes to athletic gear. What was once only acceptable to wear around the house or at the gym has now become normal everyday attire. Yes, while some athletic gear should only be worn in its proper environment (speedo swim trunks are non-negotiable), it’s nice to have a combo option for working from home, walking the dog, and running errands. Thankfully, in terms of the bottom half, and the upcoming warm weather, I’ve found the best athletic shorts for all occasions.
Before we begin, let’s address the issue of length. While the 90s were an interesting transition period from short shorts to long shorts, somewhere in the middle is preferred when it comes to thigh advertisement, shoot for a 5-to-9-inch inseam. If you’re not sure how long your shorts should be, here’s a mathematical equation to try and figure it out:
Step 1: Determine your height in inches (i.e. 6 feet = 72 inches).
Step 2: Determine your confidence score from 1-5. “1” meaning there is no limit to how much leg you can show, or “5” if you despise showing your legs in any scenario.
Step 3: Add your inches in height to your confidence score. With the total number calculated, use the assessment below to determine your proper shorts length.
· 71 or less = 5” inseam
· 72-76 = 7” inseam
· 77 or more = 9” inseam
With your newfound length at hand, here are the three best athletic shorts I’ve found for working out, hanging out, and going out(side).
Workout: Ten Thousand Interval Shorts
Ten Thousand has taken over the market as the standard for men’s fitness apparel. While their entire product line is worth featuring, their shorts are where they got their initial recognition. There are several types of shorts to choose from, specific to ones choice of activity, but my favorite for an all-around exercise short is the Interval Short. This short is great for both cardio and lifting sessions. The light weight yet tough fabric allows for both bar abrasions and comfort when running for distance. With options in length and liner, this is a no brainer when it comes to choosing a workout short that covers all your exercises.
Hangout: Uniqlo Ultra Stretch Active Shorts
Everybody needs an option for everyday around the house shorts. Something comfortable enough to lounge or work in the home, but also active enough to walk the dog or run a few errands. These shorts by Uniqlo work well in almost any scenario. They’re advertised as activewear, but with the zip pockets and attractive straight forward look it makes them an excellent everyday short. One thing to note with these shorts, you’ll have to be comfortable with your legs because they come no longer than a seven-inch inseam.
Go Out(side): Ten Thousand Foundation Shorts
Being outdoors often requires having a tougher fabric. That sounds counterintuitive when summer days outside can be sweltering hot, and lighter fabrics tend to give more relief than thicker ones. Fortunately, Ten Thousand has perfected a pair of Foundation Shorts that are both comfortable and provide that extra fabric needed for rugged terrain. Great for outdoor hikes and rucking, whether you’re taking big steps on the red rocks or brushing up against thick bristles on a wooded trail, these are your best option. They’re also great for barbell exercises that tend to have repeated contact with the thighs and hips (i.e. cleans, snatches, deadlifts).
Now go outside, exercise, do all the things. Seize the day.
